Kinds of Coffee

Anything about Coffee

Coffee is being widely consumed and the most prestigious beverage. Is is a brewed drink prepared from roasted seeds commonly called coffee beans of the coffee plant. The seeds or coffee beans are also called coffee cherries. Coffee as beverage is second rank from water. Morning, noon, afternon and evening; any time of the day drinking coffee is really a craving. It is because of its caffeine content, which has stimulating effect to the human body. In the Philippines we call coffee as "Kapeng Barako" and "Kapeng Tagalog", which means the varieties of coffee. Nowadays, coffee beverages are evolving from traditional brewed coffee. There are iced coffee mixes to choose from like cappuccino, mocha, etc. Coffee with its richness and aroma energizes coffee lovers around the world.

Coffee is also healthful since according to studies it may lower the risk of colon cancer, gallstones, cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson's disease and asthma. According also to studies, coffee contains four times the amount of cancer-fighting anti-oxidants compared from green tea. Coffee is produced from the seeds of a small red (sometimes yellow) fruit that grows on plants halfway in size between shrub and tree. The process that turns the seeds to brewed coffee is very complex compared to other beverages. Starting with the coffee grower, to the picker, then to the mill. Workers remove the fruit and dry the beans, roast them, to finally grind the beans and prepare the beverage.

Coffee plant is described as any of various tropical African shrubs or trees of the genus Coffea, especially C. arabica, widely cultivated in the tropics for their seeds that are dried, roasted, and ground to prepare a stimulating aromatic drink. The coffee plant has lush, shiny green leaves attached to long thin branches. When the plant is in season, small white flowers are seen coming from the base of the leaves. After pollination, the flowers are replaced by a ruby-like fruit, the coffee bean. Each of the fruits, usually referred to as coffee cherries, contains two seeds (or beans). When only one bean is produced, this is known as a "pea berry". The cherries are bright red and reach the size of a grape, then harvesting takes place.

In the Philippines, the known varieties of coffee are: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and Excelsa.

An information about Arabica Coffee

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/coffee/arabica.html

The scientific name of Arabica Coffee is Coffea arabica; a species of coffea home-grown from Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula, hence the name Arabica. Also, from the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan. It is also known as the "coffee shrub of Arabia", "mountain coffee" or "arabica coffee". In the Philippines, it is popularly known as the "Kapeng Tagalog".

Arabica is considered to be the best coffee because of its excellent flavor and aroma. This variety is an early bearer, it bears fruits two to three years from planting. Arabian Coffees accounts for about 80% of all coffee produced in the world. It prefers higher elevations and drier climates than its cousin C. robusta. The tropics of South America provide ideal conditions for growing Arabica Coffee which grows best between 3,000 and 6,500 feet but has been grown as high as 9,000 feet. The higher the plant is grown the slower it matures. This gives it time to develop the internal elements and oils that give coffee its aromatic flavor. Within the C. Arabica species there are three main varieties; Typica, Bourbon and Caturra. The sub-species have been bred to adapt to a specific growing region to be resistant to certain afflictions such as fungus, parasites, insects etc. that differ from region to region.

An information about Robusta Coffee

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/coffee/robusta.html

The scientific name of Robusta Coffee is Coffea canephora or Coffea robusta; a species of coffee home-grown from central and western subsaharan Africa. It is well known as Conillon in Africa and Brazil in which Robusta Coffee is abundantly grown. It is also grown in Southeast Asia where French colonists introduced it in late 19th century. Only Vietnam produces Robusta Coffee and has surpassed Brazil, India, and Indonesia to become the world's single largest exporter. By rough estimate, one third of the Robusta Coffee is produced around the world.

Canephora is easier to care for than the other major species of coffee, Coffea arabica, and, because of this, is cheaper to produce. Since arabica beans are often considered superior, robusta is usually limited to lower grade coffee blends as a filler. It is however often included in instant coffee, and in espresso blends to promote the formation of "crema". Robusta has about twice as much caffeine as arabica.

Robusta is one of two coffee species that are grown commercially. Robusta beans produce a more bitter brew, with a musty flavor and less body. It has lower quality and cheaper blends. But, it is important to note that robusta is not inferior to arabica--it is different. Grade is what determines inferiority and superiority in coffee beans, and there are all grades of both species of coffee. Demand due to consumer taste preference is what determines the market share of arabica vs. robusta coffee. The farmers plant Robusta Coffee for economic reasons. This variety is high yielding and more resistant to pests and diseases. According to Philippine agriculturists, it yields 1,200 kg or more per hectare of clean dry coffee beans.

An information about Liberica Coffee

The scientific name of Liberica is Coffea liberica; a species of coffee home-grown from Liberia, West Africa. Its grown height is about 9 meters and produces cherries that are larger than the cherries of Arabica trees. The Liberica was brought to Indonesia to replace the Arabica killed by the coffee rust disease at the end of the 19th century.

The Liberica is locally known in the Philippines as "Kapeng Barako". It is a major crop in the Philippines. Batangas and Cavite of the Philippines are the producers of Liberica coffee. According to Philippine agriculturists, this variety is tolerant to drought and can grow to wider soil types. It started bearing four to five years after transplanting and yield approximately 500 kilogram of dry coffee beans per hectare.

Liberica's almond-shaped beans have an exceptional aroma, almost floral and fruity, while its flavor is full and slightly smokey. Liberica coffee probably makes up less than 1% of the global crop of coffee, with the majority being Arabica and Robusta varieties. The local barako in the Philippines is strong and highly acidic compared to some of the more common globally marketed varieties. The coffee drinkers almost feel the caffeine coursing through their veins when they take a sip early in the morning. This variety of coffee is ideal when blended with most other coffee varieties. The most popular bean it is blended with is the Robusta coffee. These two coffee beans complement each other perfectly. When not used with Robusta, it is commonly chosen as a neutral blending flavor to pull together many gourmet coffees.

An information about Excelsa Coffee

The scientific name of Excelsa Coffee is Coffea excelsa, a species of coffee that originated in the Lake Chad area of Africa. The coffee tree grows up to 9 metres in height. It is closely related to Coffea liberica. The Excelsa coffee bean was first discovered in 1904. This hardy plant is well known for its disease and drought resistant properties. The Excelsa coffee is similar to Liberica coffee in appearance. The plant has thin, rounded leaves with a smooth edge. When these leaves first form, they are a burnt reddish violet color. They turn to a green color as they mature, though some leaves still have violet accents. It produces white flowers with four to five leaves per flower. The cherries it produces are oval shaped but slightly flattened. The medium sized coffee beans are formed in clusters.

Like most other coffee varieties, Excelsa coffee thrives in warm to hot climates. Because of the drought resistant properties, this plant can thrive in desert conditions, as well as a tropic environment. This plant has deep roots. As such, it isn’t a good candidate for greenhouse growing. Root depth severely limits the areas in which this plant can successfully be grown.

This mild flavored coffee is often likened to Coffea Liberica. It has a smooth, slightly earthy without having any hint of a burnt flavor. This is a good coffee for people who don’t drink the beverage very often and those who dislike coffee with a bold, strong flavor. Coffee beans Excelsa is often used a filler bean for many coffee blends. Coffea Arabica is one of the most popular coffees that is blended with Coffea Excelsa.

Bulldog

About This Dog

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bulldog/index.html

A Bulldog is the common name for a breed of dog also referred to as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog. It is breed of dog developed centuries ago in Great Britain for use in fighting bulls (bullbaiting). Other bulldog breeds include the American Bulldog and the French Bulldog. The Bulldog is a muscular heavy dog with a wrinkled face and a distinctive pushed-in nose.

The bulldog stands 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 cm) and weighs 40 to 50 pounds (18 to 23 kg). It has a large head, folded ears, a short muzzle, a protruding lower jaw, and loose skin that forms wrinkles on the head and face. Its short, fine coat is tan, white, reddish brown, brindle, or piebald. These kinds of breed are friendly and gregarious, they are also known for getting along well with children.

Health

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bulldog/health.html

These dogs were mostly prone to hip dysplasia, among the 467 Bulldogs tested 73.9% of them were affected, tested by Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Another is Patellar luxation which affects 6.2% of Bulldogs. Some of this breed are prone to interdigital cysts, which are cysts that form between the toes. These cause the dog some discomfort, but are treatable either by a veterinarian or an experienced owner. Other problems of these dog is having a cherry eye, a protrusion of the inner eyelid (which can be corrected by a veterinarian), hip problems and certain allergy. Usually, puppies are frequently delivered Caesarean Section, because of the large size of its head. The folds on the face of a Bulldog should be cleaned daily to prevent from infections caused by moisture. Daily exercise is required in order to avoid obesity which can lead to lung problems as well as joint problems. Bulldogs like cool places, because they are sensitive to heat, proper ventilation is needed to keep them healthy and secure.

History

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bulldog/history.html

The term "bulldog" was first mentioned in literature around 1500, the oldest spelling of the word being Bondogge and Bolddogge. The modern spelling is dated 1631 or 1632 in a letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes: "procuer mee two good Bulldoggs, and let them be sent by ye first shipp". The name “bull” was also based in the use of the dog, they were used in bull baiting. In 1835 dog fighting as a sport became illegal in England. Therefore, the Old English Bulldog had outlived his usefulness in England and his days were numbered in England. It also said that Bulldogs were crossed between Mastiff and the pug, but still the genetic origin is debated.

Bullbaiting

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bulldog/bullbaiting.html

Bullbaiting is once a barbarous but widely popular sport. A bull was tethered to a stake and attacked by specially trained bulldogs. This sport is also related to bearbaiting, cockfighting, and bullrunning which was outlawed in Britain in 1835.

In England many large groups of bears were kept expressly for the purpose. Contemporary records reveal, for example, that 13 bears were provided for an entertainment attended by Queen Elizabeth I in 1575. When a bull was baited, its nose was often blown full of pepper to further arouse it. Specially trained dogs were loosed singly, each attempting to seize the tethered animal's nose. Often a hole in the ground was provided for the bull to protect its snout. A successful dog was said to have pinned the bull. Variations on these activities included whipping a blinded bear and baiting a pony with an ape tied to its back. Dogfighting and cockfighting were often provided as companion diversions. A sport called bull running also developed in some places, usually as an annual affair. The townspeople, armed with clubs, chased to death.

Bearbaiting

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bulldog/bearbaiting.html

Bearbaiting is closely related to Bullbaiting in which bulldogs are most often included in this form of bloody sport, once common in Europe, including England. The bear was tethered to a stake in a bear pit or sunken “bear garden”. Dogs were set on the animal and a fight ensued until the bear was killed. Very often some or all of the dogs were killed instead, and the bear was saved for another occasion. The sport was particularly popular in England in the 16th century at all levels of society including the monarchy, and the Master of Bears was a Crown appointment. Tudor nobles kept “bear wards” where they had groups, or sleuths, of bears. There was a particularly famous bear garden at Southwark, London near Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Town councils had official bears, and a really fine one was a matter of civic pride. In 1835, Bearbaiting was banned in Great Britain but persisted illegally and in secret for many years as did cockfighting, which still takes place in many countries.

At the time of the Spanish conquest, avocados were grown from northern Mexico south through Central America into north-western South America and south in the Andean region as far as Peru. The Spanish conquistadors also discovered a unique use for the avocado seed. The seed yields a milky liquid that becomes red when exposed to air. The Spaniards found they could use this reddish brown or even blackish indelible liquid as ink to be used on documents. Some of these documents are still in existence today.

Avocados got their name from the Spanish explorers. They couldn't pronounce the Aztec word for the fruit, know as ahuacatl, "testicle," because of its shape, avocados were planted by various people who introduced and planted seed from Mexico and Guatemala. In the early 1890's, Juan Murrieta of Los Angeles became interested in the avocado and imported a large amount of thick-skinned fruit from Atlixco, Mexico. He distributed some of the seeds of these fruits among his friends and planted the others. From this group of seedling trees, came a number of the varieties that first attracted attention as promising commercial fruits.

How to cultivate Avocado

It is crucial to cultivate most avocado species in climates without frost and little wind. Otherwise, the fruits will drop sporadically from the tree. The tree also need well-aerated soils, these soil and climate condition are available only in few areas of the world, fruits grwon outside califoria is larger and rounded, with a smooth, medium-green skin. Commercial orchards use grafted trees and rootstocks to expedite and increase production.

Avocado can be propagated, but seeds takes four (4) to six(6) months to bear fruits, some commercial orchards are planted using grafted trees and rootstocks, avocado tree can produce 1,200 fruits annually, and can be grown only in subtropical or tropical climate. The fruit is picked once it reaches maturity. In some cases, avocado can be left on the tree for several months, which is advantage to commercial growers who seek the greatest return of their crop.

Mexico is the largest producer of the Hass variety, with over one million metric tons produced annually. Avocado is a fruit bearing tree, it is grown from seed in subtropical and tropical climates. Bamboo

Bamboo

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bamboo/index.html

Bamboo is a group of perennial evergreens in the true grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. More than 75 genera and 1,000 species of bamboos have been proposed in botanical literature, but many names are synonymous and thus not considered legitimate. Bamboos are giant, fast-growing grasses that have woody stems. They are distributed in tropical and subtropical to mild temperate regions, with the heaviest concentration and largest number of species in East and Southeast Asia and on islands of the Indian and Pacific oceans. A few species of bamboo belonging to the genus Arundinaria are native to the southern United States, where they form dense canebrakes along riverbanks and in marshy areas.

Bamboo Culms

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bamboo/culm.html

The woody, hollow aerial stems or culms of bamboo grow in branching clusters from a thick underground stem (rhizome). The culms often form a dense undergrowth that excludes other plants. Bamboo culms can attain heights ranging from 10 to 15 cm (about 4 to 6 inches) in the smallest species to more than 40 m (about 130 feet) in the largest. Mature bamboos sprout horizontal branches that bear sword-shaped leaves on stalked blades; the leaves on young culms arise directly from the stem. The culms of some species grow quickly (as much as 1 foot [0.3 m] per day).

Ornamental Bamboo

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bamboo/ornamental.html

Bamboo plants are becoming increasingly popular in landscaping, due to their vigorous growth potential and appealing aesthetic. There are multiple purposes of bamboos. Bamboos are highly colored, eye catching kinds and one purpose is appreciated as ornamental plantings. The stripped of their lower branches, the yellow or green culms and grooves sometimes stripe green or yellow depending on the varieties make an impressive visibility that bamboos are ideal in any landscape. Ornamental bamboos are for ground covers used in small clumps, for erosion control, for borders and in rock gardens.

There are many varieties of bamboo suited as ornamental purposes and landscaping. They are: Castillon, Allgold, Leopard Bamboo, Black Bamboo, Temple Bamboo, among others.

Colors of Bamboo (Stems)

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bamboo/colors.html

Bamboos with yellow canes are usually yellow throughout their lifespan but can occasionally start off green. Black species usually start with green canes which then turn black, but in established and older plants the young canes will often be black from the start. Other coloured bamboos, such as red, blue, or white, also can change throughout their lifespan. Sometimes the colours are spectacular and vibrant, usually in the young fresh canes, and other times they can change colour as they get older. Striped canes - some species have striped canes on young and new growth that then turns to green, others retain the stripes (striations) throughout the lifespan of the plant.

Purposes of Bamboo

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bamboo/purpose.html

Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in East Asia and South East Asia where the stems are used extensively in everyday life as building materials and as a highly versatile raw product, and the shoots as a food source. Its bamboo shoots are edible and eaten as vegetables by people in the Philippines. Bamboo shoots are part of the Chinese cuisines. The bamboo stems when become old, like more than two years can be made as walls for houses. They are also used as alternative pole guards to scaffoldings on building constructions.

The pulped fibres of several bamboo species, especially Dendrocalamus strictus and Bambusa arundinacea, are used to make fine-quality paper. The stems are also split up to make buckets and pipes or are used to make furniture, walking sticks, fishing poles, garden stakes, and other utensils. Some species of bamboo are used as ornamentals in landscape gardens. The fine-grained silica produced in the joints of bamboo stems has been used as a medicine in the Orient for centuries under the name tabasheer. East Asian artists, poets, and epicures have long celebrated the beauty and utility of bamboo in paintings and verse.

Flowers

African Daisy

African daisy is a summer-flowering plant with flowers like daisies. Some kinds have a ring of contrasting color right around the yellow center. The African Daisy belongs to the Asteraceae family, the genus: Arctotis, Dimorphotheca, Gazania, Gerbera, Lonas, Osteospermum, and Venidium. African daisy is also known as the African Cape Marigold. The African daisy flowering plant is excellent for naturalized areas and as ground cover for large areas, for parking strips, borders, large pots and tubs. It is an ornamental plant and can be used also as a bouquet.

African Daisy (Dimorphotheca)

Dimorphotheca is one of eight genera of the Calenduleae, with a center of diversity in Southern Africa. Some species can hybridize with Osteospermum, and crosses are sold as cultivated ornamentals. The name "Dimorphotheca" comes from the Greek "Dis" "Morphe" and "Theka", meaning "two shaped fruit", referring to the dimorphic cypselae, a trait inherent to members of the Calenduleae. Plants of this genus usually have bisexual flowers.

A hardy, spreading annual with daisy-like flowers. A native of South Africa, it has naturalized throughout the southwestern United States. Blooms are 2-4 inches across in brilliant shades of white, yellow, and orange. An excellent variety to sow in early spring, as it will produce extravagant color for weeks. Prefers full sun in well-drained soils. Sow in early spring after the danger of frost has passed, seedlings are not winter hardy. You will be delighted with this outstanding performer. Common names of Dimorphotheca are: African daisy, Cape marigold, and glandular cape marigold.

African Daisy (Lonas)

Lonas is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family. Shrub of southwestern Mediterranean region having yellow daisylike flowers. Lonas can be dried and which can be used in bouquets, pressed flower pictures, or potpourri, or on hats, wreaths, kissing balls, shadow boxes, hearth brooms, shaker boxes, window ornaments, door swags, etc.

African Daisy (Osteospermum)

Osteospermum is a genus belonging to the Calenduleae, one of the smaller tribes of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Osteosperum used to belong to the genus Dimorphotheca, but only the annual species remain in that genus; the perennials belong to Osteospermum. The genus Osteospermum is also closely related to the small genus Chrysanthemoides, such as C. incana and C. monilifera. Its common names are: African Daisy or South African Daisy, Cape Daisy and Blue-eyed Daisy. Osteospermum has now become very popular as summer bedding plant, either to put in the border or in pots.

African Daisy (Arctotis)

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/african/arc_ven.html

Arctotis is a genus of about 40-50 species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to southern Africa, from South Africa north to Angola. Some of the plants are alternatively placed in the genus Venidium. Many are called by the common name "African daisy", or "Gousblom" in Afrikaans. Some species have been developed as popular horticultural items because of their attractive yellow, orange, red, or white flowers. Gardeners cultivate some species as half-hardy annuals. The common names for the half hardy perennial Arctotis is the African Daisy. It is a native of South Africa and the plant typically flowers from summer through to late in the autumn It tends to grow best in coastal regions where it can be cooled by the ocean winds at night in the summer. But they're a beautiful plant; they look just like a daisy but they come in lots of bright colors and purples and pinks and oranges and yellows. They're really, really pretty. In South Africa they grow wild in Namaqualand, way in the middle of nowhere there'll be just thousands of acres of beautiful African daisies in bloom each year, and it's just a beauty, and it's such a beautiful sight to see. So you can bring some of that home with you too, and grow 'em in your garden. So the African daisy is a great plant that's easy to grow. Just put it in a sunny spot with good drainage, and cut it back if it turns brown in the fall. And besides that, there's nothing you have to do to it, and it'll come back every year.

African Daisy (Venidium)

The last but not the least of the Asteraceae family is Venidium. It is a genus flowering plants. Some species are alternatively placed in genus Arctotis. There are 20 to 30 annual and perennial species of Venidium, mostly in South Africa. V. fatuosum (Arctotis fatuosa) appears as many horticultural varieties. Most species occur in South Africa. Leaves alternate, deeply cut, stalked, grayish green, of cobwebby appearance when young. Flowers in solitary heads, daisylike. Ray flowers yellow or orange, sometimes with purple band at the base. Disk flowers purplish black. Venidium fastuosum or Cape Daisy is excellent as cut flowers, continuing to open in morning and close at night.

African Daisy (Gerbera)

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/african/ger_gaz.html

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber, a friend of Carolus Linnaeus. It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J.D. Hooker in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton Daisy. Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colours. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum. Gerbera is also important commercially. It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip). It is also used as a model organism in studying flower formation. Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives. Gerbera is a tender annual flower. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. It is a Perennial daisy-like flowers that are known for their long flower stems which make them ideal for cut-flower bouquets.

African Daisy (Gazania)

Gazania is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Africa. It is often planted as drought-tolerant ground cover. Gazania flowers have numerous pointy petals, each petal has a contrasting stripe in the middle or a small spot at the bottom. Its like a painter's brush stroke. This low growing plant is ideal for mass planting in drought conditions.

BUT ON THIS BLOG, the subject Tablet is what the most popular tablet nowadays, the tablet computer or the mobile tablet which has a WIFI, Bluetooth, Camera, 3G, etc.

Overview

A tablet computer, or simply tablet, is a mobile computer with display, circuitry and battery in a single unit. Tablets are often equipped with sensors, including cameras, microphone, accelerometer and touchscreen, with finger or stylus gestures replacing computer mouse and keyboard. Tablets may include physical buttons, e.g., to control basic features such as speaker volume and power and ports for network communications and to charge the battery. An on-screen, popup virtual keyboard is usually used for typing. Tablets are typically larger than smart phones or personal digital assistants at 7 inches (18 cm) or larger, measured diagonally. Hybrids that include detachable keyboards have been sold since the mid-1990s. Convertible touchscreen notebook computers have an integrated keyboard that can be hidden by a swivel or slide joint. Booklet tablets have dual-touchscreens and can be used as a notebook by displaying a virtual keyboard on one of the displays. Conceptualized in the mid-20th century and prototyped and developed in the last two decades of that century, the devices became popular in 2010. As of March 2012[update], 31% of U.S. Internet users were reported to have a tablet, which was used mainly for viewing published content such as video and news.

Among tablets available in 2012, the top-selling line of devices was Apple's iPad with 100 million sold by mid October 2012 since its release on April 3, 2010,followed by Amazon's Kindle Fire with 7 million, and Barnes & Noble's Nook with 5 million. As of May 2013, over 70% of mobile developers were targeting tablets (vs. 93% for smartphones and 18% for feature phones).

Bougainvilla

Bougainvilla

The scientific name of bougainvilla is bougainvillea. It is a flowering plant originated from Brazil. then to South America, also in southern Argentina and Peru. The bougainvilla species are bougainvillea
buttiana, bougainvillea glabra, bougainvillea peruviana, bougainvilla spectabilis and bougainvillea spinosa. It is also called bugambilia and it is a popular ornamental plant on areas with warm climates.

It is progated now in the following countries: Ethiopia, Indonesia, Aruba, the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Singapore, the Mediterranean region, the Caribbean, Mexico, South Africa, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and the United States in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Southern Texas.

Flower

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bougainvilla/flower.html .
Bougainvilla flowers most in winter and early spring, but some plants put forth scattered clusters all year. The colors are found in tones of purple, lavender, carmine, scarlet, red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Single and double flower forms are available. Double forms tend to carry their blooms near the end of the stems rather than distributing them evenly over the plant. The colorful, papery "blooms" are not flowers; they are bracts. The true flower is white, trumpet shaped and small that almost unnoticeable within the bracts. Each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts.

Each variety has its unique characteristics. It has become a very colorful and popular plant for spring and summer color making a great addition for a colorful patio or deck in the backyard.

Cultivation

Bougainvilla can grow quite large and fills an area very quickly. It can be pruned, shaped, and respond well to a spring grooming. Once its growth is established it is drought tolerant. Bougainvilla has a high salt tolerance, which makes it a natural choice for color on coastal regions.

The growth rate of Bougainvilla vary from slow-growing to rapid, depending on the particular variety. Its bloom cycles are typically four to six weeks. Bougainvilla grow best in very bright full sun and with frequent fertilization, but the plant requires little water once established. As indoor houseplants in temperate regions, they can be kept small by bonsai techniques. If overwatered, Bougainvilla will not flower and may lose leaves or wilt, or even die from root decay.

Uses

Bougainvilla can be used as a houseplant put in a pot or in hanging basket. It is perfect as fence lines, on walls and as a hedge or an accent plant.

It can also be used as bonsai. The varieties used for bonsai are: Bougainvillea brazilinensis ('Pink Pixie' bougainvillea), Bougainvillea buttiana ('Golden Glow' - Has bright yellow bracts which fade to apricot), Bougainvillea buttiana ('Louis Wathen' - orange bracts), Bougainvillea buttiana ('Mrs. Butt': - crimson bracts), Bougainvillea buttiana ('Orange King'), Bougainvillea glabra (paper flower, lesser bougainvillea - the most common species used for bonsai. It has shiny green, slightly hairy leaves and magenta colored bracts), Bougainvillea glabra ('Magnifica' - rose pink bracts), Bougainvillea glabra ('Snow White' - white bracts), Bougainvillea peruviana (rosy pink bracts), and Bougainvillea spectabilis (pink or mauve bracts).

History

http://www.eazydee1.webatu.com/bougainvilla/history.html .

Bougainvilla was first published as "Buginvillea" in Genera Plantarum by A. L. de Jusseau in 1789. In 1930 it was corrected to "Bougainvillea" in the Index Kewensis and was split to B. spectabilis and B. glabra as botanists recognized each distinction.

These species were introduced into Europe in early 19th century, then in France and England and then to Australia and other countries. The B. buttiana was discovered by Mrs. R.V. Butt in Cartagena, a Spanish port in the Meditterranean, which a natural hybrid of B. glabra and B. peruviana. Many hybrid crosses later were created in East Africa, India, the Canary Islands, Australia, North America, and the Philippines.
